Hooray National Donut Day is June 5th! While Canadians are proud to celebrate more then one donut day a year, what about the days you want to include your dogs? I personally love to include my two senior dogs in as much as possible. Chances are they will accompany me on the car rides to the nearest Tim Hortons, but I will not leave them out of the fun!
I love making treats for my two dogs to share. A very simply “donut recipe” I like to use only includes apples and peanut butter, a snack I also enjoy myself! An apple thinly sliced with peanut butter as the “icing”, toss that in the freezer for a few minutes and you’ve got a fun frozen treat for your pups!
Did you know, not all peanut butter is safe for dogs? Many popular jars of nut butter contain an ingredient called xylitol. This sweetener is toxic for dogs as it can cause hypoglycemia (low blood sugar). Low blood sugar has the ability to compromise the function of the dog’s liver. This can cause side effects such as fainting or seizure. If your dog ever dog accidentally ingests a toxic substance, be sure to call your veterinarian and seek help.
Be sure to stick to canine friendly ingredients this summer and enjoy National Donut Day!
